I have received many compliments for WCEMS when I have been out in the public eye, especially Wal-mart.  I believe we all should, on duty or not, be positive towards our workplace.  I know after working a 24 hour shift the last place I am going to be positive is Wal-mart or any other retail store so I just DON'T GO.  I will make sure when I do go out in the public eye I am happy and smiling.  You do not know who is watching you, it could be that patient that you picked up last week.  You may not remember them but they will remember you, trust me!  Mary Kay has taught me alot these past two years, and thank God I found Mary Kay!!!

I know this is not Tyler County but there we are either in service or not.  But, here is the difference.  If say Sistersville EMS were dispatched for a call to Middlebourne and Middlebourne EMS were out of service I would still know there was a call because I ALWAYS WEAR MY PAGER!!  I would, and have, first responded.  Now luckily Middlebourne EMS has not been out of service but it could happen.  My point is Folsom is dispatched on Fire Frequency and we do not hear the page if we are wearing our pagers.  If the call is in Pine Grove and say Richard were in Pine Grove but out of service cause he did not have a driver, Folsom should be dispatched but also 50's tones should be dropped for First Response.  That way the patient is receiving care promptly.  It all boils down to patient care and I think we all believe that this is our major concern.

As I advised earlier, I also have a problem with this policy "Not in Service."  I believe that if there is a call in 50 area, they should always page station 50 first.  There are times that I am in the Pine Grove area for my daughter's games, etc and am technically available for a call, but don't call dispatch to tell them that.  I also like to go out to eat at their area restaurants on occasion.  I am also available for a call then.  But I may not know if there is another crew person available to respond with me.  However, if only co 1 is paged for the call, I could be next door and not even know that there is an unresponsive pt within 50 feet of my location.  Station 60 doesn't always have a crew on shift, but are always paged for every call in the area to see if anyone is in the area and available.  Station 30 does not always call dispatch when there is a crew available, yet, they are paged first.  They aren't passed up for a call just because no one called dispatch to say there is someone available.  There is not only one person that can respond in that area.  There are many of us that have family in the area and are in that response area without notifying dispatch.  We would like to be given the opportunity to provide services to our community quickly, also.

Is this saying that Jeremy and I, or anyone else in the area, can not respond if we don't call 911 and be available to sit by the pager and wait? When not on shift, we have family lives. I do however, carry my radio 24/7. Because it does take a while to get help sometimes, I like to be prepared. If the tones don't drop, I can not provide services to MY community. That is why we are here, right? I do not see this as a good thing. We are here, we should be able to serve as we can. Am I going to jump on every thing running? No. If it is a "they won't die from a paper cut" call, a first responder is not needed. If you were having a heart attack or something not so great, would you want to wait, or get someone down the street to you? And yes, I have gone on Pine Grove, Hundred and Wileyville calls when I was not on shift. I do not care for this policy. Patient care first. I do not care if we are trying to be friends with surrounding communities. Patient care first. I do not care if feelings are hurt. Patient care first. I have no problem working with other communities, I believe I can never have too many hands! Sometimes, I can grab a truck, sometimes it will be best to hit the scene and provide needed care until other help arrives. So if anyone cares, I vote no. Thank you for your time.

The attached is a revised draft of a proposed procedure regarding 911 dispatching in the Pine Grove area. Please comment on any problems or improvements to the revised procedure. The comments that preceeded this revision are valid and are appreciated. I analyzed the data for 6 months of calls to the Station 50 area that included over 100 runs. There appeared to be 2 calls where Rapid Responders responded outside of the
time that Station 50 was on duty or there was a standby crew available. There may have been more, but our existing data made that hard to determine.

The following is an extract of the mutual aid agreement that was agreed on by Folsom VFD and the WCEAA Board that is included to show that this revision satisfies and improves on the original intent:
  • It is agreed whenever there is an emergency call for the area normally covered by the station 50 crew and there is no station 50 crew on duty, Wetzel County 911 Dispatch will first tone out station 50 for the call, then page either Folsom VFD EMS or W.C.E.A.A. station 20 to respond depending on which agency is on back up duty for the week.
  • It is also agreed that in the event an off duty station 50 crew responds to the station to respond to the emergency call and arrives on scene first, the station 50 crew will be permitted to continue with patient care and transport. At this point, Wetzel County 911 Dispatch will be notified that other responding agency(s) can "stand down" unless a medic or other assistance is needed.

I went into walmart today to deposit my check and one of our patients called me by name.  I of course could not remember her name or the incident at first but figured it out later.  She said we were an awsome bunch and she was telling everyone how well the crew before me and how well I took care of her during the transfer.  She said was telling everyone that they should donate to us and support our membership.   Glad our customer service was good for her.
